Acoustic Master Class: Ed Gerhard Music Book Review
By Amazon Customer
Ed Gerhards tabular music book is great for getting started to play some of his compositions. It is easily understood with the guitar tabs as well as the music notes presented in parallel with each other in the book. The audio cd with playing tips are helpful, but I would have preferred it to be video clips presenting these techniques for the user to visually see what Ed do could help a guitar player extensively more than a audio clip. In general I would like to see more books like this from Ed Gerhard, one doesn't only learn hoe to play his compositions but you also practice fingerstyle techniques which improves you overall as a guitar player.

Consider your goals before buying
By A reader
I learned Gerhard's version of "The Water is Wide" from an old Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine article, and was thrilled to discover this book. But here's what I found out when it arrived: (a) The CD that accompanies the book has almost no music on it. It is mostly a tutorial to help you with certain snarky technical issues in the individual pieces. Nothing wrong with that, but not helpful if you haven't heard the pieces and would like to know what you're working on in advance. (b) A couple of the pieces are written for use with a slide. (c) Most of the pieces require an unusual tuning. Dropped D tuning is not a big deal, but most of the others are more complicated than that. I wanted this music for performance purposes, and having to stop and tune extensively between pieces makes their use extremely inconvenient, unless you have two equivalent guitars and somebody to tune for you in between. If you know all this and still want the book, it's easy to read and contains both tablature and music notation. Gerhard's work is terrific. But if I had it to do over, I would have passed, based on the above limitations.

An Excellent Inside View of Ed Gerhard's Music
By jodi picarelli
This book has been transcribed to perfection, trying to capture as much as possible of Ed's style. I was able to follow along with Ed's recording, helping to clear up the wall of sound he creates with one guitar. Of course with most charts it is almost impossible to write out all of Ed's inflections, but the main text is solid. The tunings are right on the mark and the pieces written for the Weissenborn really defines the beauty of the instrument.
The reader/musician can't go wrong with this purchase, I highly endorse this songbook.

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, by Joy Angela Degruy

From the beginning of American chattel slavery in 1619, until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, Africans were hunted like animals, captured, sold, tortured and raped. They experienced the worst kind of physical, emotional, psycho- logical and spiritual abuse. Given such history, Dr. Joy DeGruy asks, “Isn’t it likely that many slaves were severely traumatized? Furthermore, did the trauma and the effects of such horrific abuse end with the abolition of slavery?”

Emancipation was followed by one hundred more years of institutionalized subjugation through the enactment of Black Codes and Jim Crow laws, peonage and convict leasing, and domestic terrorism and lynching. Today the violations continue, and when combined with the crimes of the past, result in yet unmeasured injury. What do repeated traumas visited upon generation after generation of a people produce? What are the impacts of the ordeals associated with chattel slavery, and with the institutions that followed, on African Americans today?

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, answers theses questions and more. Dr. DeGruy encourages African Americans to view their attitudes, assumptions, and behaviors through the lens of history and so gain a greater understanding of the impact centuries of slavery and oppression has had on African Americans. “With this understanding we can explore the role our history has played in the evolution of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, both negative and positive. This exploration will help lay the foundation necessary to ensure our well- being and the sustained health of future generations.

Review
Dr. Joy DeGruy is a priceless asset to us all. She has lifted the bandages from the 400 year-old abscess of slavery that remains un-healed. Many black and white Americans have been taught that slavery ended by legislative means in 1865 - so the issue is neatly side-stepped in school curricula, print and broadcast media. However, the hallmark of classroom teaching and responsible journalism must be proper context - for full understanding. The removal of the slave shackle is important, but what about the emotional damage suffered by the enslaved? Dr. DeGruy has raised this argument brilliantly, for years, lecturing far and wide. Her many appearances on my program, Like It Is, have evoked huge audience reactions from our viewers. Many have told me how coming to understand Dr. DeGruy's message on "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" has helped them grapple with the multiplicity of problems today. I share those feelings of my viewers. Now Dr. DeGruy has set down her highly important message/thesis in print. And so, to quote this wondrous physician: "Let the healing begin." -Gil Noble, Producer and Host, Like It Is, WABC_TV Dr. Joy DeGruy's Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing is a masterwork. Her deep understanding, critical analysis, and determination to illuminate core truths are essential to addressing the long-lived devastation of slavery. Her book is the balm we need to heal ourselves and our relationships. It is a gift of wholeness. -Susan Taylor, Editorial Director, Essence Magazine Dr. DeGruy's book is seminal research in the field of differential cross- cultural diagnosis for mental health. Cultural Competence is a requirement for mental health and behavioral science workers. This text is required reading for all learners and practitioners. It is a vast reservoir of the how, why what, when, and where for much of the enduring injury and psychic pain of African Americans. This text moves us beyond deficit modeling and pathology; it opens a window to innovative models for healing in our multi-ethnic, pluralistic and linguistically diverse society. -Edwin J. Nichols, Ph.D. Clinical/Industrial Psychologist. At last, the book that all people who are truly interested in under- standing the lingering psychological and social impact of enslavement on Africans and Europeans has arrived. It is no exaggeration to say that Dr. DeGruy's Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome will mark a milestone in the understanding of the relationship between racism and slavery. Read this book again and again and then give it to your friends, family and colleagues who want to understand how the ghost of slavery haunts us all. -Dr. Ray Winbush, Institute for Urban Research, Morgan State University Dr. DeGruy's mesmerizing, riveting book is vital reading for our time. The corrosive residue on unmitigated and unrelieved atrocities called chattel slavery scours out the very core of our national identity. Neither the descendants of chattel slavery nor its designers have been unscathed. One - doomed to mythologize its meaning, the other - to turn searing pain into self-loathing. We ignore our history at our own peril. With Dr. DeGruy's potent words we can and will heal. -Adeliade L. Sanford, Vice Chancellor, Board of Regents, State of New York

Very Validating, Especially in the Wake of Michael Brown's Death
By Empathy
I had came across this phenomenal lecturer on Youtube.com (from the advice of my mentor) and knew instantly that I wanted to hear more of what this woman had to say. This book is a great supplement to her Youtube.com video at http://youtu.be/PMVRyD4UlHk?t=20s. The Youtube video could stand alone; whereas, this book is icing. The Youtube seemed more detailed, especially in terms of cognitive dissonance and other things like the postcard pictures of lynchings. I think the video is more recent and therefore there are more supporting facts. Regardless, this should be required reading for African Americans, especially in an academic setting.

Even though America has a tarnished past, especially when it comes to the stain of slavery and the subsequent treatment of African Americans, this book offers hope and concrete steps to heal from PTSS. This book has touched me at a deep level, just hearing about other people's reactions was very validating, especially when it comes to anger seething beneath the surface.

One thing that I enjoyed learning through the video that wasn't in the book was that the Statue of Liberty's chains (not shown in most photos or on film) was supposed to symbolize America's abolition of slavery in 1865. We don't hear about that, but this has been a fact verified on the government's website at www.nps.gov/stli/historyculture/abolition.htm. This woman is phenomenal and I hope the truth continues to come out.

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome

I was amazed to identify so many traits that I have practiced all my life and did not realize the connections to my past history. I highly recommend this book to all who have been inheritants and survivors of degradation and miserys suffered in past generations and handed down as measures of protection and survival of our race in America and elsewhere.

A Starting Point for Black Healing
By John Nicholson
This was a good read. Though I am quite late on reading this, I imagine that this book likely had a greater impact between 2004-2010 when the idea of intergenerational trauma was somewhat in its infancy. The science behind this concept is still being researched to bolster its validity. I appreciate that PTSS is proposed as a THEORY and that she elucidates the semantics of scientific jargon for those who may be uninformed. She offers her theory to indirectly explain cultural, behavioral, and environmental influences of maladaptive behaviors that are specific to the black community. PTSS is not a clinical diagnosis and she clarifies this. The language carries both a formal and informal ambiance; it's direct and simple enough to comprehend, but it's not underwhelming either. She is honest enough to declare that because of the broadness of this theory, healing (treatment) cannot be simplified to a few tasks. She essentially uses her clinical experience and her cultural/spiritual journey to Africa to inform a social and self healing for African Americans. The historical background is somewhat refreshing, but to the experienced scholar it's more of a review. I also appreciate her using the DSM to explain her theory while differentiating from an actual diagnosis. The book overall is somewhat of a starting point for the African American who is seeking to understand themselves, their culture, and their history. It's littered with many relevant and inspiring quotes from other Black influentials. I warn people to apply her theory very lightly after reading because behaviors can stem from other influences and personal experiences that are not racially motivated. PTSS is essentially a cultural syndrome with a possible genetic basis: a rousing and intriguing suggestion to help a collection of people unify and rise to power without using fear as a weapon. I am coupling this book with Isis Papers (which is more scholarly, detailed, and relevant) to gain more understanding of the oppressive system that has created this cultural syndrome. Highly recommend for any Black student of psychology!

A Time Capsule of Useful Urban Design Information
By John F. Dreha
Given that this book was written in the 1950's, it is still relevent to current urban design thinking. It must have been very innovative in the 1950's.

Once the reader gets past the unusual layout of the book and the out of date language, there are many useful urban design concepts to be found in this little book.

Pathways, boundaries, disconnects and nodes are all discussed from varying points of view, using notable USA cities as examples.

One point of relevance is the statement that there is not one city in the USA that could be considered a great example of urban design (as stated in the 1950's). As an Australian, I could say the same of Australian cities. The Australian cities of Sydney and Brisbane are terrible examples of urban sprawl. The north-south spread of Greater Sydney now covers almost 200 kilometres.

The principles stated in this book are still relevant to urban designers today.

Kevin Lynch - Planning Student Commentary
By kradomski3
Reading Kevin Lynch is like getting a new pair of glasses. Nothing has actually changed in your surroundings, but you see things differently. Legibility, or readability, is an important part of navigating the city landscape. To study this "we must consider not just the city as a thing in itself, but the city being perceived by its inhabitants" (Lynch 3).

The city is a constantly growing experience. As you move through a city you are experiencing things in an expanding way. "At every instant, there is more than the eye can see, more than the ear can hear, a setting or a view waiting to be explored. Nothing is experienced by itself, but always in relation to its surroundings, the sequences of events leading up to it, the memory of past experiences"(Lynch 1). There is always something more to add to how you experience the city. These memories and experiences of a city become meaningful to the people who live there. To Lynch, visual quality of a city and the mental images associated with it are of upmost importance when studying the urban landscape.

A city can be considered a very important and powerful symbol of a society. In The Image of the City Lynch explores the cities of Boston, Jersey City and Los Angeles revealing the knowledge of the inhabitants and how they view their city. When asked to describe a city, any person would say that a city is a collection of "streets, buildings, sidewalks, bridges," but Lynch prefers to describe the city as a interrelated connection of paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Paths are the channels through which the observer moves and that constitute the predominant element in their image, whereas edges are linear elements that are not paths- they are lateral references, sometimes boundaries. Districts, nodes and landmarks are also prominent parts of a city. Districts are sections of the city that a person "enters" and that have identifying characteristics. Nodes are points within the city that can be used as destinations or points of interest, such as transit stations. Landmarks serve the same purpose as nodes; however, they are physical objects, where nodes can be plazas, intersections or park spaces.

"A distinctive and legible environment not only offers security but also heightens the potential depth and intensity of human experience"(Lynch 5). An environmental image links person to place and gives a sense or emotional security. An environmental image is made up of three components- identity, structure and meaning. First, you must identify the object, then determine the spatial or pattern relation, and assign an emotional value about it.

The importance that you place on a landscape or place is called an environmental image. Lynch ascertains that there are two aspects of an environmental image, what is distinct within the environment, and what the observer thinks and what meaning they associate with their surroundings. "People observe the city while moving through it, and along these paths the other environmental elements are arranged and related" (Lynch 47). Lynch discovered through surveys and interviews from these cities that people tend to adapt to their surroundings, and formulate patterns and identity from what they see and experience every day. People place a significant amount of importance on their personal environmental images, and this can influence their reactions to changes.

As planners "we are continuously engaged in the attempt to organize our surroundings, to structure and identify them" (Lynch 90). In designing cities it is always important to acknowledge the importance of legibility and an environmental image. "When reshaping cities it should be possible to give them a form which facilitates these organizing efforts rather than frustrates them" (Lynch 90).

My teacher suggested that we buy this book while I was in an Urban Planning class and I am very happy I listened to him. He often referred to this book as the "Bible of Urban Planning" and I see why. Kevin Lynch created a precedent over 50 years ago and his ways are still being practiced today. The fact that, as I said, the book was written over 50 years ago and it is still extremely credible speaks volumes for how advanced his thinking was. Cities from Boston to Los Angeles are designed based off of the ideas mentioned in this book. For the final project in this class I was required, with my partners, to redesign an urban area using what my teacher called "Lynch-ese," referring to the architectural language described by Kevin Lynch. I firmly believe that this book is a must read for anyone remotely interested in urban development and design. In my case it helped open up a new window for me and allowed me to learn an aspect of architecture I never really researched before. Since this class and reading this book I've found myself loving being able to study the urban aspects of areas and figuring out how Kevin Lynch's ideas are shown in a particular space. After my positive experience with this book I don't know how anyone can possibly have anything negative about Kevin Lynch's "The Image of the City."
