A groundbreaking investigation into the evolving concept of the unfinished, from the Renaissance to the present day

This groundbreaking book explores the evolving concept of unfinishedness as essential to understanding art movements from the Renaissance to the present day. Unfinished featuresmore than 200 works, created in a variety of media, by artists ranging from Leonardo, Titian, Rembrandt, Turner, and Czanne to Picasso, Warhol, Twombly, Freud, Richter, and Nauman. What unites these works, across centuries and media, is that each one displays some aspect of being unfinished. Essays and case studies by major contemporary scholars address this key concept from the perspective of both the creator and the viewer, probing the impact that this long artistic trajectory—which can be traced back to the first century—has had on modern and contemporary art. The book explores the degrees to which instances of incompleteness were accidental or intentional, experimental or conceptual. Also included are illuminating interviews with contemporary artists, including Tuymans, Celmins, and Marden, and parallel considerations of the unfinished in literature and film. The result is a multidisciplinary approach and thought-provoking analysis that provide valuable insight into the making, meaning, and critical reception of the unfinished in art.

this book will serve nicely. Most prints are large and crisp

If u didn't get to the exhibition, this book will serve nicely. Most prints are large and crisp. Text is smart and tight enough. One gripe: I esp like whole and detail shots to get the "at the museum" feel. Detail shots would have been nice. Also, while I appreciate the desire to be "true" to the art, if a dark painting is going to be reduced to 1/6 or 1/8 page it is worth lightening it up a bit (small Corot and Manet shots are not good; and a Degas at 1/4 page is frustratingly inaccessible, bad choice for a sig reduction). NTL, there is plenty here that is done well and I'm savoring the book.

This is a beautiful book on a wonderful exhibition from the MET BREUER. If you weren't lucky enough to see the show, buy this book!
Unfinished art is often more interesting than finished art and you get to see the process at different stages.
Wonderful.
