Great Art Work

The works included are absolutely exceptional. Although, I was expecting more interviews and paragraphs. The way this book is laid out is each artist gets about two pages of (about 3-4 pieces) their work and one sentence explaining their aesthetic. So it's more of a overview than a study. But exemplary work on covering the now and the range. Definitely worth the price for a rather well-rounded tour of the illustration world as of 2014. Heller wrote a pretty good essay as a pretext. Definitely a good purchase, and now I'm looking forward to their next volume and maybe check out the 100 illustrators book. Also, the text in this book is in English, German and French. (No... that's even less actual text...) But I guess it's helpful for the Europeans to purchase this book. Oh actually a lot of artists covered are from Northern Europe (A LOT), and some from UK (London). And that kind of motivates me to work harder to represent artists from Asia and mixed (less privileged) background.

I thought the work in this publication was varied and exceptional. I may be biased however since my son's work (T. Dylan Moore) is included in the collection of 150 illustrators.

The author argues that democracies can be just tolerated by military rulers, until they feel that elected governments have moved to far away from the boundaries set by the military establishments. Under this light, the author analyzes relationships between the different democratic governments of Argentina since 1983 and the military institutions of the country. Well written and very interesting analysis.

If u didn't get to the exhibition, this book will serve nicely. Most prints are large and crisp. Text is smart and tight enough. One gripe: I esp like whole and detail shots to get the "at the museum" feel. Detail shots would have been nice. Also, while I appreciate the desire to be "true" to the art, if a dark painting is going to be reduced to 1/6 or 1/8 page it is worth lightening it up a bit (small Corot and Manet shots are not good; and a Degas at 1/4 page is frustratingly inaccessible, bad choice for a sig reduction). NTL, there is plenty here that is done well and I'm savoring the book.

Why is this book not a movie yet? Seriously...

This was the third Ben Elton book I've read, albeit this particular book was the one I was originally recommended (by a munter at V Festival, I might add) I actually rate this in my 5 favourite books. `High Society' is written in short sections - not chapters. This fact, along with the obvious subject matter, makes it an ideal book for the non reader. It follows the story of a few central characters, all with a connection to drugs.

Peter Paget is the main character. He is a recently revitalised back bench Labour MP, questing to pass a members bill that legalises all drugs in the UK. Tommy Hanson, the winner of (insert generic music talent show here) and a subsequent British superstar, wants to stop living like a rock'n'roll trash bag. Jessie is a 17 year old Weedgie girl who hastily moves to London, gets hooked on heroin - and ends up on the game. Sonia, an 18 year old Brummy bird gets banged up in a Thai prison for trying to smuggle heroin back to the UK. Samantha Spencer is Paget's beautiful, but emotionally unhinged parliamentary secretary. Paula Wooldridge is a recreational drug user. She is also a hack journalist determined to end Paget's career. Barry Leman is an honest, old school police officer on Paget's side. He is threatened by a couple of corrupt police officers, to keep out of drug policy.

`High Society' is an addictive (pardon the pun) page turner, full of scallywags, reprobates, junkies, drinkers, and party people. Aside from all of this frivolity, there are shrewd thoughts, honest observations, and important questions asked throughout the pages of this book. The topic is poignant, and one of the most controversial issues of our times. Although I'm not fully convinced - Ben Elton argues a good case for the legalisation of drugs.

Couldn't put it down.

I've enjoyed all of Ben Elton's books, but none so much as High Society. This tremendously well thought out book is difficult to put down. The running stories move rapidly together with amazing clarity and wit. The book follows the lives of several charactors and their relations with drugs. From the drug enslaved prostitute to the member of parliament pushing to have all drugs legalised. You'll finish this book with a mournful sense that you know the charactors stories in an intimate way. As well as hearing a commentary on the modern day war on drugs with such clarity that you feel astonished.

Tommy Hanson Rules

This was my first read or for that matter first exposure to Ben Elton. I was hooked in the very first paragraph, very funny and yes over the top characters. But that is what is fun about the book, a comical stereotypical handling of a very serious subject: Drugs and the possible effects of legalization of drugs. I have often re-read the exerps of the lead character Tommy Hanson the Rock Star. I am currently reading DEAD FAMOUS and will probably read STARK next. Buy HIGH SOCIETY, read it, enjoy it, good read for your next trip by airplane.

About the Author
Born in Pennsylvania in 1912, George S Rentz was recruited by Aramco in 1946 to set up the company's research and translation division at Dhahran. His sojourn there (1946-63), where he immersed himself in the history, culture and geography of the Arabian Peninsula, transformed him into Aramco's resident authority on Arabic and Arabian matters and established him as a scholar of international repute. Rentz influenced a generation of Arabist scholars, and laid the foundations for the study of Saudi Arabian history in the West. William Facey is a historian of Arabia. He is also a museum consultant and a director of the London Centre of Arab Studies.

Multi-layered approach to a complicated subject

The book's premise is that there are many views on the Wahhabi movement, and that in a comparative manner, the reader may find that there are many conflicting accounts as there are opinions on the subject. Being such a specific group, it tends to be more scholarly and not an entry level tome such as Natana Delong-Bas' "The Wahhabi Movement." The prospective reader is cautioned about some of the biases present in the book which must be taken into account if working on any sort of scholarly project.
