From Booklist
This fifth book in the 39 Clues: Cahills versus Vespers series is the work of Newbery Medal–winning Park and follows young teens Amy and Dan Cahill as they continue their worldwide quest to protect and preserve their large and illustrious family. It turns out that there’s a mole within their close-working group (thus the title), so off they go to Yale University (and beyond) to follow clues and get to the bottom of things. After one of their suspects pronounces that the brother-sister team doesn’t know a “rat’s ass” about loyalty, things get mildly violent, with a few gunshots; then tricky, with a couple boyfriend/girlfriend issues; and then dramatic, with some hostage-release attempts. All of these elements help to make this series popular beyond those interested in the more cerebral components, such as Ivy League medievalists and rare manuscripts. The corresponding online game and accompanying game cards (in the non-library edition) don’t hurt popularity either, and fans will be carried right along with a few answers and quite a cliffhanger until a different author produces the next volume. Grades 5-8. --Andrew Medlar

As if the collective authors decided they needed a villain and just yanked one out and were like "look, they're important
By Dione Basseri
While most of the 39 Clues books make an effort to stay on a fairly historical track, with a bit of manufactured history thrown in, the final couple books always just throw out things that are so far from the truth that its place as a semi-educational series is just destroyed.

We get a few revelations here. Who the mole among the Cahills is, which made me feel a bit silly, as it's the person who felt very tacked-on at the beginning of this sub-series. And, well...tacked on at the end of the previous series, really. As if the collective authors decided they needed a villain and just yanked one out and were like "look, they're important, they've always been important, see!"

I kind of rolled my eyes a bit at the reveal of the Vesper's final goal, since it feels a bit over-dramatic and, well, impractical? I mean, first, you're assuming that an ancient Greek scientist had a strong enough grasp on scientific principles that his theories would remain valid in the modern age, and that he could somehow find a way to create a doomsday device. And, well...who the heck living on a planet wants to destroy said planet? They live there!

Still, we're given a fairly unexpected ending, which I have to congratulate. Books of build up and I was expecting there to be a last-minute swerve, but nope. Dan takes the potion. Woah.

It's a bridging book. I'll be continuing the series, but, overall, the big reveals were small and the main plot of this entire thing is now such a cliche. Probably not Park's fault, as they do all develop the plot together, but kind of disappointing, nonetheless.

Linda Sue Park does a wonderful job creating suspense
By KidsReads
Dan and Amy, along with their teammates Atticus and Jake, just barely touch down in New York City before they receive their next instructions from the evil Vesper One. It doesn't take their collective and very intelligent brains long to figure out to head for Yale University to inspect an ancient and unreadable manuscript called the Voynich. It just so happens that the Voynich was a special project of Atticus and Jake's mom before she died, and the added knowledge she had shared with her sons helps the team figure out that Vesper One wants a missing page of the manuscript that is hidden in Brazil.

But immediately after landing in Brazil, the team receives a threatening message that Atticus has been singled out for assassination. Twice an attempt is made on his life, and twice someone else is almost killed. Dan, Amy and Jake desperately want to send him someplace safe; however, Atticus is determined to stay and help solve the riddles. No one else is going to get hurt because of him. Unfortunately, someone does get hurt --- one of the hostages held by Vesper One ends up dead.

This news stuns and cripples the team, especially Amy. The combined pressures of leadership, fighting Vesper One and even her confused heart over Evan and Jake have overloaded her soul. She begins slipping away into depression. A very concerned Dan steps up to take over leadership, but he finds he misses taking orders from his sister. Despite their stumbling blocks, the team manages to make two huge discoveries: first, they finally get a pretty good grasp on the identity of Vesper One, and the result is highly disturbing. And even more disturbing, terrifying even, is the exposure of Vesper One's sinister plans!

Book Five of this exciting series pulls fans even deeper into the mystery and finally reveals a few vexing answers, like what the evil Vespers are attempting. And the answers are chilling! Of course, all of these hungered for answers leads to even more questions, and Linda Sue Park does a wonderful job creating suspense as she guides readers through the intriguing history of the Voynich manuscript. She also handles Amy's new fall into depressed despair with sympathy and compassion, and then ends the book with one heck of a cliffhanger. Alas, the end of the series is in sight, which is both exciting and regretful. Fans have a very long and tantalizing wait ahead of them for the final book in the series, DAY OF DOOM, available in March 2013!

Great series.
By tankermom
My son loves this series. I read a few just to know what they were--and was pleasantly surprised to find an engaging story line which was age appropriate. I was particularly pleased to find no witchcraft--so prevalent in stories for this age group. Also, kids love the clues and ways they can interact. I am thrilled to find something I find no objection with that captures his attention and takes him from reluctant to eager reader.
