Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx, by Arthur Levine, Laura Scheiber

''Levine and Scheiber tell two tales about poor kids growing up in the Bronx -- one inspires, the other rips your heart out. They also compel us to recognize that educational failure has both individual and societal costs that can be fatal. We can and must do better.'' --Joel Klein, Chancellor, New York City Department of Education

''With all the emotive range of a literary novel, Arthur Levine and Laura Scheiber have written a persuasive call to action for all educators. We must be mentors and provide all students the chance to explore all the world has to offer, as best we can.'' --James P. Comer, M.D., Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center, Associate Dean, Yale School of Medicine

''We need more leaders like Arthur Levine who are willing to reach across community divides to build authentic relationships with the next generation of Americans. In Unequal Fortunes, Levine and Scheiber show what it means to learn and care about the lives of young Latinos and the payoffs for our children, their communities, and this country.'' --Sarita E. Brown, president, Excelencia in Education

''Compelling, incisive, and poignant. This is an intimate reflection of life's changing realities -- for individuals, neighborhoods, communities, and education. In this narrative manifesto for action, Levine and Scheiber inspire us upward to a dream for all!'' -- Sharon Lynn Kagan, Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Early Childhood and Family Policy, Teachers College, Columbia University

In this powerful book, Arthur Levine (president of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation) and coauthor Laura Scheiber revisit the South Bronx, where Levine grew up in the 1960s, and compare his experiences with those of a group of teenagers coming of age in the same neighborhood nearly 40 years later. Shaken by the violent death of Leo Disla, one of the young men in his group, Levine and Scheiber explore what happened to Leo and how society failed him. In this compelling account, we meet Leo's family and friends and learn about his hopes and fears. We witness the devastating effects of poverty and racism: low-wage, dead-end jobs; inadequate housing; high crime rates; appalling schools; violence; drugs; a broken legal system; prison; and underage funerals. The authors not only tell Arthur's and Leo's stories, but struggle to explain why their lives were so starkly different. They focus on the new social realities that have shaped Levine's old neighborhood, and they conclude with the lessons that must be learned if we are to help today's disenfranchised children and restore to them the American Dream of a ''better, richer, and happier life.''

Truth, Perspective, and Possibilities
By Stephanie
"All truth goes through three stages: 1)First it is ridiculed; 2)Second, it is violently opposed; 3)Finally it is accepted as self-evident ~Arthur Schopenhauer

I thought "Unequal Fortunes" was a moving, honest, and totally raw portrayal of a bitter reality in the world of education and society. I was mesmerized into each character's story and often found myself in suspense. This book is very well written and engaging, organized with insight, and inspiring to action for those who wish to focus on moving forward. I give praise to the authors of "Unequal Fortunes" for sharing this thoughtful work of academic integrity using real anecdotes of misfortune in a delicate balance of truth.

I've been compelled to share this book with teachers, parents, and those interested in education policy....

A must read for educators, parents, sociologists, new yorkers...
By Johanna Laikari
Unequal Fortunes is a heartbreaking and poignant tale of two kids growing up in the Bronx. It is also a beautifully and concisely written portrait of the challenges of our education system, and where we come up short. As well, Levine and Scheiber bring us into the raw, emotional landscape of the youth of today; this book made me enraged at the realities that they face. Only when we are all freed of the oppressions that some of us face, will we be able to function as a better society. This book is a step in that direction and is a must read for all those who work with, are parents of, come into contact with or are concerned about inner city youth in our country, and the educational system and society that shape them.

Does 'Artistic License' have limits ?
By Cathy T.
When an adult daughter sought an appropriate present for her father's 62nd birthday, she selected "Unequal Fortunes: Snapshots from the South Bronx" - since both of her parents grew up in the South Bronx. (Specifically, 140th St. and Cypress Ave.)

Part I - "Arthur's Story" - does, indeed, establish the author's bona fides as an alumnus of a South Bronx immigrant ghetto neighborhood similar to our own. For anyone from these and similar places, his descriptions of these early locations are grand nostalgia. Even his 1957 move from the South Bronx to the much-safer neighborhood in the mid-northern part of the Bronx - is described very well. We also made that "upward bound" trek to more northern climes in the Bronx in the mid-1960s - easily recognizing his accurate characterizations of this decidedly _not_ South Bronx neighborhood. If this short book had ended there, it would have earned a much higher rating.
Parts II and III describe the trials of later, poorer residents of that second neighborhood, and how their fortunes diverged from the author's obvious success. Passed on through a broken school system without even basic skills, never desiring to part with their non-American identity by learning responsible American conduct or rudimentary English, the sad story of ethnic failure was repeated continuously throughout the entire Bronx from the 1940s until today. The author blames greedy businessmen, the courts, and even the police for the entirely-irresponsible lifestyle choices of many recent immigrants - instead of elitist academics, progressive sociologists, and others who would place enforced and sustained group diversity above the content of an individual's character.
This social-science experiment can be summed up in two words: Abject Failure.
Far too many of us first-generation and naturalized Americans - most, in fact - rose well above the poverty in the real South Bronx (often, with nothing more than a HS diploma, and sometimes, not even with that) - to buy into the author's bogus conclusions.
