Worth The Wait...

There's not much I can add to the other 75+ glowing reviews of this book, but I absolutely recommend it. If you've read the prequels, then you're obviously going to read this, the first novel full novel of the actual series. I got very impatient waiting for Mr. Jace to finally release this book, but it was worth it. The story is original, the characters are engaging, and the plot moves along at great pace...especially near the end.

Overall, I just love these stories, and can't recommend them enough. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. I would love to spend just one hour inside the head of Cameron Jace...where he comes up with some of this stuff, I'll never know, but the guy is definitely a born storyteller!

Be prepared to get your mind blown!

From the first time I've seen the prequels come by in my "recommended" list, I've been hooked. Cameron Jace is an extraordinary writer if it comes to clever connections, interesting points of view and a story so well written it is amazing! All your favourite characters of the Grimm fairy tales (and some others) pay a visit in the prequels and I have been waiting very patiently for this first book to come out.
This book is amazingly well written. If you're from America, you're in for a twist because not everything is as you're used to in this story. In this story you meet Loki Blackstar, a dreamhunter who is going on an incredible adventure. As I do not want to say too much in case I accidentally do a "spoiler" I will just say this:
If you LOVE a well written story, that has multiple levels, clever thought out plots, is unpredictable, exciting to read, really good connections made with rhymes and history in the real world as we know it and with an incredible depth to the characters in it, my suggestion is to ABSOLUTELY GET THIS BOOK!

I read it in one day and I loved it. I do really suggest to read the prequels as well since they will bring more depth to this story, but dont worry if you haven't read those or want to read them after, you will still be able to understand exactly what is going on ;)

the book of beautiful lies :)

From the first page this was a book that hooked me. I found it a new and interesting take on the classic tale of Snow White. The plot was well thought out and full of pleasant surprises that if you have read the sequels you may see before they are revealed. Don't worry if you havent, it isn't necessary to enjoy this book. My only complaint is that i wanted it to continue. The characters were like old friends. I for one am eagerly awaiting anything from Cameron Jace on this delightful series.

So it Wasn't a Wild West Cowboy Story; Who Cares

Not someone who uses book covers to judge a book's contents I assumed from the title that it was about adventures on the road to Kentucky. Since titles can be misleading too and I never spend my money without getting the free sample; I got the sample, read it and was intrigued enough to buy the book.

Davis Hallum didn't much care for his half-brother Andrew Paxton and especially disliked his habit of showing up when Davis was away from home. The last time he came home and found his children outdoors playing in the cold and his wife Faith inside alone with Andrew, he caught them in bed together. In the ensuing fight, Andrew pulled a gun and accidentally shot Faith as she ran between the two men. A quick thinker, Andrew threw the door open and called to the children that their father had killed their mother. His children and everyone else in the community believed Andrew.

Convicted of the crime and sentenced to death Davis escapes with no choice but to leave his children behind. Traveling west he joins in the construction of the Wilderness Road. The road to Kentucky is a long one filled with hard work, troublemakers and attacks by bandits and Indians. In the meantime Faith's parents send a bounty hunter after Andrew to make him pay for the murder of their daughter.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who likes historical action adventure fiction.

A good well-written western, an engaging tale.

I first got hooked on westerns when I read A B Guthrie's novels about the West. Once you've read those you'll do 2 things; get hooked on westerns and you'll also realize that not everyone can write about the west as well as author Guthrie.

I decided to check out 'The Wilderness Road' and I was not the least bit disappointed.

The story involves Davis Hallum who came home one day to find his wife Faith inside alone with his half-brother Andrew and they were in bed together. In the ensuing fight, Faith is accidentally killed.

Convicted of the crime and sentenced to death Davis escapes and leaves his children behind to go west. Faith's relatives send a bounty hunter after Davis. The story of his life on the run in the ensuing years is main story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it to those who enjoy westerns, historical fiction.

The author's writing is reminiscent of A B Guthrie in that he has the ability to tell a story in a way that puts you in the protagonists head and he is adept at describing the action, scenery and lives of people in this historical era.

I will check out a few more of this author's books since I know the writing is first rate, and he seems to have a knack for great storytelling.

Excellent book for a difficult subject

This book was not only required for a class where we had to write a security policy for the term paper, I am using it for my Senior Capstone project security policy. I do not find the book wordy, as another reviewer has said. Security Policy is not that thrilling a topic, but it is necessary if you are going to be in Security Management. I do hope, however, that this book will be updated soon. Some of the info, such as all the references to ISO 17799 need to be updated to the newer ISO 27001. Much has changed in the security field since this book came out in 2006. But overall, a very helpful book if you have to actually write policies.

Useful information, but not a good textbook.

As intelligent and knowledgeable as the author is, she is not a skilled communicator and the concepts are presented in a very clumsy and verbose manner. There are also an unacceptably large number of contradictions and semantic errors. She does not seem to relate well to the university students that are the intended audience of the book. There is a lot of useful information in the book. This appears to be based on the author's considerable real world experience. However, the ISO standard the book is based upon is now out-of-date. This is a good book to use for research purposes, but is awful to use as a textbook. Critical concepts are not presented in the most concise way.

Excellent textbook

This is the first textbook that I've actually enjoyed reading! It's not John Grisham, of course; but, unlike most textbooks, the material is actually practical and informative and not overly dull.

Greene covers a full overview of security policies and general security procedures. Because the text is not particularly technical, its audience shouldn't be limited to IT or security people. It is a great resource for any manager of a small business or professional office who wants to be sure his/her office is doing whatever is necessary to keep their information secure.

For many years prints from the Meiji period have gotten a bad rap. Collectors have prefered the earlier Edo works that are justly celebrated. The artistic crimes alleged against the Meiji period artisans include harsher colors and dyes as opposed to the more restrained palate of earlier Ukiyo-e period. Travelers to Japan in the 19th century were offended by the supposed garishness of these modern works.

Luckily, the prints of this period were saved for future generations by collectors of vision who saw the artisitic merit in these examples of the Meiji period. The works detailed in this book are among the finest examples of the genre. They show a nation in transition. The forms are very similar to the earlier types of woodblocks, but the subject matter is not. These works celebrate the transition of Japan to a modern nation state. The emperor is shown indulging in a number of modern pursuits (going to the races or the circus). But the general patriotic tone of these prints is not limited to the emperor. Both the Sino-Japanese and Russo Japanese wars provide a rich source of illustration. Personally, I find these works more fascinating as they show how the Meiji period artists incorporate old forms in new genres.

This book celebrates woodblocks in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston and features a great deal of commentary. The essays by Donald Keene are up to his usual high standard of scholarly excellence and serve to put the period into context. However the most interesting is by Frederic Sharf which describes the deliciousness of building a world class collection of Meiji era prints. It is not just the joy of collecting he describes, but pleasure to be gained from learning the history of a cherished object. Sharf generously donated his collection to the MFA, making this unequalled collection available to the wider public.

This book is essential to anyone seeking to collect these marvelous woodblocks (many of the ones pictured in the book can still be acquired and remain within the reach of the ordinary collector).

Woodblock prints from the Meiji era are presented in a series of over 90 color illustrations which go beyond the traditional perception of Japanese subjects as gardens and geishas. These prints depicted current events and were painted in vivid colors, and Japan At The Dawn Of The Modern Age captures their vibrant spirit, along with history essential to understanding their meaning.
