A fascinating Short Story

"In Breaking Point" Cameron has been sent to Camp Mosher, a remote camp for young criminals on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia where he has met Brianna a drug dealer who's determined to escape with his help. With a hurricane looming the pair sneak away in two canoes only to have their survival skills, fortitude and tenuous relationship tested in a battle against the elements.

This novella takes Cameron on a journey of self-discovery as he begins to take control over his choices and responsibility for his actions during a storm. With a fluid natural writing style Lesley Choyce builds a short story that looks at a young thief who quickly learns lessons about life not only when he gets caught up in Brianna's plans, a girl he's smitten with but with Philip the kid with a chip on his shoulder that he's responsible for mentoring.

Although I thought the plot could have been expanded more making the ending less anti-climatic, the characters quickly rouse the readers interest with the complexity of their personalities. Cameron, the young thief sees through the rehabilitation program at camp with its experience classes and counselling sessions, but forms a fragile bond with Chris because of his growing respect for the counsellor. He's resourceful, clever and selfless although easily manipulated, his infatuation with a hot-looking girl overriding his common sense. Brianna a troubled teenage drug dealer hides her fears, weakness and pain behind a feisty, tough, strong-willed persona. She's reckless and self-absorbed enticing Cameron with her plans but easily deserting him when things get rough.

In "Breaking Point" Cameron learns not only about survival in the wild but in the heart, as he struggles through love, longing and loss. It's a fascinating and emotionally intense story that could have been the basis of a great full length novel. I'd rate it a solid 3.5 if the scale allowed.

Silly but somewhat humorous

This book is completely useless but somewhat entertaining. The prose accompanying each equation is witty. This book would be a reasonable cheesy gift for the person who has everything. The first chapter has an overview of basic algebra, including the all-important order of operations, so it might even be a useful gift for someone whose math education ended in junior high.

On the negative side, the "Dating and Relationships" section is completely written for a male perspective and generally invokes some negative stereotypes of women. The book could definitely use more egalitarian language to give it a broader appeal.

The calculator included with the book (packaged in the front cover) does not have an exponent function, even though most of the equations use an exponent. Did the publisher's marketing department even glance at the text before picking the gimmicky cover?

Best buy two

This is the sort of book you cannot wait to share with friends. Alas, as I've learned several times over, it's also the sort of book friends are reluctant to return after you loan it to them. Besides being funny and clever and near impossible to put down, it's actually useful, in the same way that a Rubik's Cube is (used to be) useful: to transport you into the realm of problems that wink, "I have a solution! Find me!" I cannot recommend this book too highly.

It's light cheeky humor that shouldn't be taken seriously

This book has some entertaining cheeky humor that most will appreciate, but it's best for those who don't have math backgrounds and who can enjoy it for the components of the analyses (writing style included). Even the author (or maybe even the editor) can see is that none of these equations are meant to be taken any more seriously than a Cosmo quiz, and that's what really makes this book bearable. For example, in a question on whether to follow a self-help book's advice, "Geek Logik" gets 1/16th of the effect of any other self-help book if the equation is followed. There are other unintended effects that in most modeling would be seriously questioned, but that's not the intent of this book.

The equations mostly come out as "if good factors > bad factors, then do it", with logical "ands" (i.e., both things need to happen) represented by multiplication and logical "ors" (i.e., at least one thing needs to happen) represented by additions. There are the occassional quadratics, cubics, and square roots to give a veneer of mathematic complexity, but most of these can be reduced to simpler factors and reasons. It can be fun to think about what the author intended, and the extra work put in to make it more substantial than a "sum up the score points" can be appreciated (even if there's no basis for correctness).

The book is inexpensive, so buy it as a silly coffee table book that can be brushed through in an hour; don't buy it for someone only because they have a math, engineering, or physics background. If they don't like this style of humor, then it will be a dud. Anyone buying it for the cover's marketing (i.e., the "foolproof equations") will likewise be sorely disappointed.

What a joke...

First, let me say I do love the author and have read all her previous books BUT this was a bad joke... There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that the series should not have ended with this one... nothing happens and then guess what??? Another cliffhanger... she should have waited, written one last book and ended it rather than trying to milk all she can from her readers... I skipped most of this one because it was boring and repetitive... just bad... oh well...

Off with ALL their heads!

One dimensional villains who "chuckle" and "smirk" incessantly? Check.
Googling masked as research? Check.
Diamond mines in Africa 400 years prior to the discovery of diamonds? Check.
Unenforcable legal debts? Check!
Prime ministers like Winston Churchill & Margaret Thatcher, plus an assorted number of kings, queens and diplomats that have signed the death warrants of innocent women as late as the 1900's, just because the Hawks are so powerful? Check!

Yes, all you Brits out there: Pepper IS in fact saying that England - a democracy - is nothing more than a banana republic in disguise.That your ruthless papparazzis, known for their exposees of royalty, celebrities and politicians, have failed to notice this gigantic scandal that would topple people of real power...

Worst of all; Pepper shuts down completely when she's confronted with her shoddy work, lack of quality control and credibility.
Because who cares, "It's about the emotion!" (Yes, that's what the author more or less replied.)

*Sigh*

The quality of education must be dropping like a stone if hr fans consider this a well researched book. Fourth Debt is a result of basic googling at best, and whatever betas she's using are either lacking the knowledge or the guts to tell her she needs to focus of quality control.

I can only conclude that the clever people stopped reading a long time ago - when Pepper placed Milan in Spain.

Which begs the question, why do I continue reading this series?

*Facepalm*

Now bring on the "click unhelpful" campaign from Pepper's fans.

You aren't missing anything if you skip to the final book

Enough of this BS. This book just sucked. This author just soaked me for another $4 really for nothing. I'm going to wait and see if anyone is willing to post a spoiler about the final book. I'm done spending money on this author permanently. Too much useless internal dialogue. A good editor would have advised this author to cut the crap and turn these books into a trilogy. I'm not even sure what the 4th debt was or if it was paid it in this book called the 4th Debt.
