Beautiful color plates. Outstanding painter! Great book.

The name Edouard Cortes is not often heard in the United States when discussing 19th and early 20th century French painters. It should be.
Edouard Cortes (1882-1969) was a very prolific painter who gave us beautifully lit scenes of Paris during the early to mid 1900's. His paintings are shimmering examples of everything fine representational painting should be. His work captures the glimmering lights of Paris and chronicles the changes that took place in the streets of Paris during his lifetime.

This book introduces the reader to the painter, his work, and brings the man to life with stories of meetings and anecdotes directly from Cortes. It is written in both English and French with extremely beautiful and detailed color plates. The brushwork is clear, the photos are exceptional, and I am very pleased with the purchase.

I don't know exactly how many color plates there are, but the book is 245 pages. Almost every page has an image, many pages have two color plates, so I would guess there are at least 300 high-quality images of Cortes paintings.

I highly recommend this book to painters and collectors although the price is exceptionally high. I paint for a living, and the high quality photos if his work are priceless to me. I've seen many original Cortes paintings, and the images in this book do his work justice.

Buy the book. It may make you ill for a while spending this much for a book, but I've had my copy for five years now and the pain of spending that much has finally receded. This is one of my favorite books in a huge collection of books on painters. Invaluable reference and inspiration waiting inside.

Roger Keckeissen was born and raised in New Jersey. His love of the outdoors, developed early on in upstate New York's Catskill Mountains, drew him westward. He owned Henry's Fork Angler in Idaho and guided there for some time before settling in Livingston, Montana, where he spent the rest of his life.

Fly Fishing History at its Best

Little has been written about Art Flick, author of Streamside Guide to Naturals and their Imitations until now. His life in the Catskills as innkeeper, guide,conservationist and fly designer is a fascinating story. I received this engaging book two days before Christmas and could not put it down, even to the point of ignoring the grandchildren part of Christmas Day. Roger Keckeissen's remembrance of Flick's life is a tribute to the passions of fly fishing and caring for rivers. Flick was a man ahead of the time who was able to protect the Schoharie River because he spoke simply, clearly and with conviction. There is still much to be learned from Art Flick.

A fitting tribute to one of America's best.

I just finished reading this book. I couldn't put it down. I am an avid fly fisherman, fly tier and I own a large collection of flyfishing books. This one is a jewel. I would include it in the best five flyfishing books that I own. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the sport. It is a really well written biography by any standard.

I could not put down this wonderfully written look back at a bygone era in the Catskills and at Art Flick, a brilliant and kindhearted woodsman and fly fisher and self-taught entomologist who humbly influenced and gently touched the sport of American fly fishing as only a small handful of other anglers and authors have ... I knew the author and traveled with him when he relocated from California to the Henry's Fork region in 1979, and Roger was truly a brilliant, multi-talented and well-read Renaissance man as well as the best fly fisherman I've ever known, hands down ... I remember him and his dog Skookum fondly ... this is a must-read book for anyone interested in American fly fishing history in general and in the influence that the Catskills region and its most famous inhabitant has had on American fly fishing history.

About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he received a B.A. in Sociology. "Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised." This fascination led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his masters’ thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain. Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology. He has taught introductory sociology for 30 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. "I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing." Dr. Schaefer is author of the third edition of Sociology: A Brief Introduction (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Dr. Schaefer is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups now in its eighth edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, second edition. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 1994-1995. Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to "look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. It will also make you more aware of peoples’ different needs and interests — and perhaps more ready to work for the common good, while still recognizing the individuality of each person."

Received in good condition; wrapped well.

Seller sent it in a reasonable time & it was wrapped well. As for the actual contents of the book (Sociology), I haven't really read it-just skimmed it to get an idea of what the layout of the book is like. Thankfully, it's an online class & I don't have homework every night to do (just prep for tests every Thursday, "open book, of course," according to our instructor, lol!). I do think this will be an interesting subject (I like Psych & I did take Sociology in high school; plus, I do wonder why people are the way they are, & maybe this course will give me answers).

I am reading this book as required for class & I am finding this book to be highly informative! I am finding certain aspects of sociology that are fitting to myself & others I know. Even if a person is not in a Sociology class & is looking for something educational to read (yes, people read sociology & psych books for fun!), this is a book I would highly recommend!

It makes a good typical sociology textbook

The book TOPIC gets 0 stars from me. I think the time spent in college on this politically driven agenda is a load of bull. That's why this is the only textbook I've ever rented. Can't warrant one extra penny if I can help it. lol
However, that is not what this review is about, but it limits me to adding 4 stars as it is hard to even credit the material in ANY beginner sociology course...as far as a course book goes, this one fits a college course in sociology. It makes a good typical sociology textbook.
In addition, the "sellers" I rented the textbook from were punctual and sent a book in fine shape. Seller recommended.

Easy to understand, shows real world application of theories

Had to purchase this book for a class, appreciated that it was pretty easy to read and there was consistent examples of real-world situations and applications that went a long way towards understanding the concepts and theories presented. On a personal note, the attitude of the author/contributor about some specific topics came through loud and clear and I found that very annoying, mainly because I had an opposing view, but also because this is a textbook and I don't feel the author's personal opinion should factor in. Overall, it was a useful tool and I got a lot out of it.
