About the Author

Mike Rosenberg is an Assistant Professor at IESE Business School. Professor Rosenberg joined the faculty at IESE after working for more than 15 years as a Management Consultant for companies such as Arthur D. Little, A.T. Kearney, and Heidrich & Struggles working in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Professor Rosenberg lectures on Strategy, Globalization, and Sustainability in IESE's MBA and executive programs. He is also Academic Director of a number of the school’s top-ranked executive education programs. In addition to his academic work, Professor Rosenberg routinely consults with leading international companies and is asked to speak on topics relating to scenario planning, sustainability, and managing global firms.

A Pragmatic Approach to Sustainability.

Businesses have been behind the sustainability curve. This book will help board members and executives to catch up. In terms of mapping a coherent sustainability strategy Mike Rosenberg develops an excellent framework that gives shape to the lenses that opposing stakeholders have in this discussion. The strategy challenges for stakeholders who, at times, are on the same side though one would not have guessed it, Rosenberg articulates in terms of their starting point or kick off; time and timing; focus; risk management; the role played by government and the purpose of a strategy. He draws on numerous examples and case studies to illustrate his argument. (Full disclosure: The writer of this review is mentioned on Page 19 on the hard cover edition.)
Readers will find that Rosenberg is essentially pragmatic. After many years of board level experience he stays away from the abstract and remains at all times hands-on, an approach that will facilitate an ongoing discussion that should be taking place in many board rooms today.

Bookburners: Episode 1

Nice strong entry to a serial type shared world.

Up front I should say that I have not had much luck with Max Gladstone. I was not impressed with his opening novel in his ongoing series. Not enough to continue with it. And I have read at least one of his stand alone shorter works (I believe on Tor.com) and found it similar in quality in terms of his style to my taste. Just not a right fit. So I was surprised at how much I enjoyed his set up here.

This is very much both a work that establishes the premise and character of a cop drawn into a secret society that protects the unknowing world (for the most part) of magic books that can unleash devastating horrors. This has been done before, but it is a clean tight and nice story that provides plenty of punch even as it paves the way for the shared entries that follow.

It not only removed any doubts to the series started here, but also gives me the impetus to make sure to give Gladstone a second chance elsewhere.

How about a TV series based on this serial?

The first thing I need to say about Book Burners is that it is definitely episodic, rather than serialistic. Each episode is a self-contained story, and the overarching theme introduced in the first episode is moved forward. Unlike many serials, I didn’t feel cheated when I got to the end of each episode. I can easily see a TV series being produced from each episode, and I’d love to watch it.

Episode one starts the whole thing off, and whereas many serials have to front-load the series with a lot of information in the first installment, I didn’t feel information overload that is all-to-common. The story jumps into the action, and I was along for the ride. After fifty minutes at my reading speed, the story was complete, and I had to force myself to wait until the next day for episode two.

enjoyable lite mystery

I really enjoyed this book. I did not enjoy the first book as much , it was much too heavy and depressing. This one is really a character driven book (the mystery is just a small bit added on) This is really Quinn's book he takes Dave home to meet the family... and boy o boy what a family it is.They fight and bad mouth each other constantly and of couse Dave has never experienced any thing like it in his life! But you can always tell how much that family cares for it's members. He lived with his mother in a small house. A very quiet existence. Dave came out in college whereas Quinn always knew he was gay and his family always knew and accepted him. I really loved Dave and Quinns relationship,and the sex was very well done! Great value for the money 2307 locations..highly recommend!

Great Read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this Quinn and Dave mystery. The reason I bought it was because I had enjoyed "Garnetville" so much (another in this series). I love the Quinn and Dave relationship. They talk very sharply to each other almost continuously but still obviously love each other and show it passionately. I much prefer this type of relationship to one in which the guys always talk in a lovey-day way. Life is simply not like that. The crime Q & D solve is a complex one and the reader is left guessing who the murderer might be until the very end. I am eagerly awaiting Mispiel's next book in this series later this year! I will definitely read all Quinn and Dave mysteries I can possibly acquire.

About the Author

David Colander has been the Christian A Johnson Distinguished Professor of Economics at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont since 1982. He has authored, co-authored, or edited over 40 books (including a principles and intermediate macro text) and 200 articles on a wide range of topics. His books have been, or are being, translated into a number of different languages, including Chinese, Bulgarian, Polish, Italian, and Spanish.

He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and has taught at Columbia University, Vassar College, the University of Miami as well as Middlebury. He has also been a consultant to Time-Life Films, a consultant to Congress, a Brookings Policy Fellow, and a Visiting Scholar at Nuffield College, Oxford. In 2001-2002 he was the Kelly Professor of Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University.

He is a former President of both the Eastern Economic Association and History of Economic Thought Society and is, or has been, on the editorial boards of the Journal of the History of Economic Thought, Journal of Economic Methodology, Eastern Economic Journal, and The Journal of Socioeconomics, and Journal of Economic Perspectives. He is a member of the AEA Committee on Economic Education.

Elgin Hunt is deceased. He was one of the early authors of this book when it began in the 1930s, and took over as sole author in the 1950s. He continued revising the book until the late 1960s when David Colander took over.

Must read for expartiates

Wonderful book. Must read for people work in multi-cultural work environments. Majority of S&P 500 companies are multi-national firms. Two thirds of the multi-national firm make their earnings outside US. Even if you are outside US you may work in other places like Germany, China or England. This book gives big picture on cultural aspects of the life. One of the example, author distinguishes mono chronic societies like US and poly chronic societies in the Asia where mass thinking dominates. If you are a student from east and going for studies in the US, you must know the invisible boundaries and personal space among friends and how ferociously independent Americans are. had I known when I was a college student, I shouldn't have upset some of my old friends. Better learn through books like these before venturing into other cultures. May be not a perfect in all aspect but definitely great introduction to other cultures.

I have had this book for several years and it is still one of my all time favorite intercultural reference books. Mr Hooker does the best job I have ever seen of going deep and explaining clearly some important skills necessary to survive and thrive while working internationally. He titrates the core information from long term leaders in the international business-cross cultural studies field and gives thoughtful stories-examples that are very human. And he isn't hampered by the fear of offending those who remain always politically correct. I have been in the intercultural counseling field for 25 years, there are newer books but none better than this one.

About the Author

Geoffrey L. Greif, DSW, LCSW-C is Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.� He is the author of books and articles related to family issues and men’s and women’s relationships.� A previous book of his, Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships, was published in 2009. In 2010 he received the University of Maryland Board of Regents faculty award for teaching.

Kathleen Holtz Deal, PhD, LCSW is Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She is the author of articles and book chapters related to supervision and professional development. In 2011 she received the award as outstanding teacher at the University of Maryland Baltimore campus.

Immensely Valuable for Couples and a Pleasure to Read

TWO PLUS TWO is the latest of nearly ten books by Dr. Geoffrey L. Greif---several of them, like this one, written with distinguished colleagues. Each has been a delight to read ( I have profited from all ). While each has provided useful grist for the scholar's mill, each also is written in a delightful style accessible to the general reader, of which I am one. The books are devoid of academic jargon and other mystifying elements.
Two by Two introduces the reader to a subject with which all couples have experience, but about the implications of which we probably rarely think: the profound importance of and benefit couples derive from friendships with other couples, and the effects of such relationships upon the partners and their marriages.
As with Dr. Greif's other works, the book explains clearly the methodology, the expectations, the results (anticipated and surprising), and the lessons for scholars, but principally the lessons for readers---- here for couples of all ages, races, etc.
The book is not long, and is an easy read. It uses stories of real couples (names changed)and their experiences, a format essential to its entertaining, reader-friendly mode.
I recommend it without reservation.
