The value of a book isn't in it's depth but it's substance

This is a substantial book in that regard. Not a tome but a clear and cogent discussion of a topic dear to my professional heart. It should be a reference in every business technologist's library who deals with process management, high value resources and content.

Great for the executive and practitioner!

Dr. Kirchmer has done a fantastic job of writing a book that can be used by both the executive and the practitioner. Most books either target one or the other but this book provides the perfect combination of useful information for the executive to understand why process excellence can result in high performance; as well as for the practitioner to understand how to make that happen without going into excrutiating detail. I found many useful nuggets in this book and especially like the way the book is structured. The chapters flow very naturally starting with basic definitions of business process and business process management; then going into more advanced topics like process execution, change management and process governance as well as several other topics. Each chapter is also written to stand alone, I found that each chapter was well encapsulated and I could read it independantly from the rest of the book and it held its own. This could prove very useful if you just wanted to share a single concept with a colleague or manager, e.g. you may want to share the chapter titled 'Globalization requires MPE' with a senior executive responsible for a global business unit OR you may want to share the chapter titled 'Information Technology Enabling Process Execution with MPE' with your Information Technology team.
Overall the book was an easy read and short enough to complete in one sitting and also makes a good reference book.
Lastly, I especially like the fact that the author commissioned a pop artist to design the cover of the book as he indicates in the Preface.

This is a remarkable book - a must read for every parent, parent-to-be, and teacher! I read it shortly after its publication, and was so impressed that I called and also spoke with Barbara Tizard, its British author and educational researcher. I also gave individual copies to the members of the board of our local school district, who were debating whether to open a program for three-year-olds in our middle-to-upper class neighborhood.

To compare the intellectual effectiveness of school and home, respectively, of preschoolers in two-parent families on public assistance, Dr. Tizard wired the preschoolers with tiny microphones and followed them into the two environments. As I remember, the experiment was rather lengthy - perhaps several months long.

The outcomes were stunning - even to the researchers, as I recall; across the board the children experienced dramatically more teachable moments and had more intellectual leaps in their homes than they did at school. Because instant responses by parents were able to satisfy immediately the questions children asked, the children were able to grasp a concept at the exact time they exhibited curiosity about it. If my memory serves me correctly, the individual interactions at school between the child and the teacher were at a bare minimum, and mainly were limited to comments such as, " Johnny, please give the glue back to Susie," or "Tell Jenny to quit kicking me", rather than intellectually speculating about why something floats or sinks.

On the other hand, even the poor home offered a ripe environment for the opportunity of satisfying curiosity. After arriving at home after a morning at preschool, a little girl, while eating her lunch, asked her mother why the roof was slanted. The recorder picked up the mother's reply and subsequent discussion (snow, gravity, etc.) as both mother and child pondered this profound scientific concept.

Great Lesson For Children

Edward had all kinds of stuff. His house was full of stuff. His friends no longer came to visit Edward because his house was packed full of his stuff. He wanted to spend time with the stuff instead of his friends.

One day a big truck drove down the street in front of Edward's house and caused it to shake. All the stuff in the house collapsed and trapped Edward inside. He had a tiny space to stay that was surrounded by stuff.

Edward's friends were worried about him. They dug through the stuff in the house and found Edward dazed and alone. Edward finally decided to get rid of the stuff.

Edward's friends helped him clean out his house. They sold, donated and trashed "stuff" until it was all gone. Edward had his house back!

I believe that children must be taught to organize their stuff. They must learn how to keep the things that are most valuable to them and discard the things that they no longer use.

"Stuff" is an excellent book to share with children of all ages. The story is humorous and fun. Things take a serious turn when Edward chooses his stuff over relationships and experiences with his friends and family.

Life is about choices. This book will teach children that it is nice to have "stuff", but friends and good times are so much nicer. Highly recommended.

Wonderful book. Adults would benefit from reading it as well as children that it is meant for. This would make a great gift for a child that can't seem to get enough.

About the Author
Wilfried Brutsaert is William L. Lewis Professor of Engineering at Cornell University. In a long and prestigious career in the research and teaching of hydrology, Professor Brutsaert has received many awards and honors, including: the Hydrological Award and Robert E. Horton Award, American Geophysical Union; President, Hydrology Section, American Geophysical Union, from 1992 to 1994, Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and American Meteorological Society; the Ray K. Linsley Award, American Institute of Hydrology; Walter B. Langbein Lecturer, American Geophysical Union; International Award, Japan Society of Hydrology & Water Resources; Jule G. Charney Award, American Meteorological Society. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has published two previous books, Evaporation into the Atmosphere: Theory, History and Applications (D. Reidel Pub. Co., 1982), and Gas Transfer at Water Surfaces (with G. H. Jirka, D. Reidel Pub. Co., 1984). He has authored and co-authored more than 170 journal articles.

Not really an introduction

Text seems to be more of an introduction for an individual in pursuit of a doctorate with interest in research in the field. Heavily laden with derivations using higher level math. Very, very little practical application.

I'm a hydrology student in a rigorous program, and I used this text for a graduate course. I'm slightly biased, because when I first decided to study hydrology I checked this book out of the library and tried to give it a go, but it was mostly incomprehensible to me because I didn't yet have the math background to understand it. I thought the integral symbol was a fancy S. Now that I've used it in a class, I think it's my favorite textbook, but I'm also probably just kind of stoked that I can now understand every bit of it!

The best thing about it in my opinion is that it includes lots of "optional" sections in a different font, so if you want or need to know more about a specific derivation or relationship, it's laid out very well, but if you aren't interested you can just skip forward to the next main section. I will still refer to Dingman and Freeze & Cherry for some things, but because I've already been over both of those books in other classes, this one felt like a slightly more intense version, with greater detail and better organization than Dingman.

About the Author

Mark Edward Soper has been working with PCs since the days of the IBM PC/XT and AT as a salesperson, technology advisor, consultant, experimenter, and technology writer and content creator. Since 1992, he has taught thousands of students across the country how to repair, manage, and troubleshoot the hardware, software, operating systems, and firmware inside their PCs. He has created many versions of his experimental computer known as “FrankenPC” for this and previous books. Mark earned his CompTIA A+ Certification in 1999 and has written five other A+ Certification books covering previous versions of the A+ Certification exams for Pearson imprints. Mark is also the creator of Building and Repairing PCs (Que Video).

This is a great book for anyone who is on the dating scene. It tells you just about everything you need to know about dating and includes all the "Do's and Dont's" It has a few formatting issues but it is still easy to read and understand.

Thank You Dr. Walsh

I have been reading about child and adolescent development since my graduate school days. Later, when my children were born I was also a voracious reader of all the major writers on child and adolescent development. How I wish I had this book when my kids were in junior and senior high school!
Dr. Walsh has absolutely nailed adolescence. Amazing. He has taken an enormous amount of scholarly research and delivered it to us in readable and useable form. He clearly loves what he does and his passion for kids shines through in every chapter. It is a joy to read such a powerful combination of scholarship and common sense.
Someday I would love to meet this man. I am sure I would learn a lot. I recommend this book without reservation to every parent and teen out there who wants to understand these years.

Highly Recommended for Parents of Adolescents

This will likely benefit anyone who is a parent of an adolescent. I think that it would also be helpful to adolescents themselves (if they would read it) in understanding some of their own behavior.

Walsh provides a lot of information on the latest research in brain development from adolescence to adulthood and its effects on attitudes, behavior, etc. He also discusses hormonal changes as well as cultural and other influences that are helpful in understanding the teen years.

Along with the scientific research he provides, Dr. Walsh also compares parenting styles, discusses activities for kids that can help in the short and long term, and provides realistic ideas for parenting during these tumultuous years. One of his particularly good suggestions is behavioral contracts. He provides a couple of specific examples of these, which are quite good.

One great quote that he has to start off chapter one makes it clear that surviving adolescence has been an issue for millennia: "Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers". This is attributed to none other than Socrates in the fifth century, B.C.

Walsh clearly defines adolescence: "it begins at puberty and ends ... sometime".

Interwoven with the scientific information and helpful tips, he relates some stories, funny and otherwise, that most parents of those in this age group will be able to understand. One that I found particularly humorous related to ultra cold weather and adolescent dressing habits. This can be found on page 214.

Great Book!

What's most remarkable about this book is how easy and fun it is to read. There are lots of stories sprinkled in with the scientific information, and Walsh's friendly, engaging voice comes across on every page. I wish I'd had this book when I was a teenager. It would have been nice to know that pains and dramas that afflicted me were the part of the process of literally growing into my adult brain. I know this book is intended for parents, but I think there are a lot of kids out there who would find it a good read too.
