About the Author
Philip Thody was Professor of French Literature and Head of the Department of French at the Univerisity of Leeds until his retirement in 1993. He has written studies of Anouilh, Camus, Genet, Huxley, Proust and Sartre. He is also the author of Introducing Barthes.

Howard Read recently graduated from the Royal College of Art and is now working as a freelance illustrator. In 1997, he won the student prize in the Folio Society Golden Jubilee competition.

Not a Good Start on Sartre

If you are looking for a good, quick introduction to Sartre's Philosophy, I would not start with _Introducing Sartre_ from Totem Books, but with _Sartre For Beginners_ from Writers and Readers Publishing.

_Introducing Sartre_ focuses more on Biographical information, and brief Literary analysis of Sartre's novels and plays, than on his Philosophical works and their meaning. The illustrations are frequently just "fluffy" caricaturization instead of helping us understand characterization. Why would I want to struggle with trying to determine which figure is supposed to be Aron, Nizan or Sartre?

The book lacks a Glossary (which is further indication of its Biographical/Literary approach rather than Philosophical), and there is no Bibliography (all references must be gleaned from within the text.)

While as a whole, the book was a somewhat interesting read, the weakness of its philosophical examination allowed me to only rate it 3-Stars.

Good bio, bad philosophy

Just as a previous reviewer stated, this book focuses too much on the biographical Sartre, and not enough on the philosophical Sartre. The pictures don't really add much to the text either. If you are looking for an intro to Sartre's life, this book is adequate, but if you want to learn about his philosophy, then you should look elswhere.

Very little on existentialism - too much on Sartre

_Introducing Sartre_ is an interesting concept: use the format of a graphic novel to expound on the ideas of one of the 20th century's greatest minds. Unfortunately, the concept falls flat in execution.

I won't go into detail about the relative merits (or not) of the artwork. The book, however, left much to be desired. It is essentially a biography of Jean - Jacques Sartre, with only cursory attention paid to existentialism as a philosophy. Admittedly the two are related, but I had really hoped for a closer and deeper examiniation of his ideas - instead I got medicore biography.

If a summary of Sartre's life is of interest, this would be a great place to begin. If, however, you are looking for information about his ideas, go elsewhere.

Good information, but very much LACKING

I decided to write a review for this since there have been no review yet. I was taking Anatomy and Physiology as a class and needed a guide that could help explain things easier. I have heard about the Incredibly Easy series from a friend and after looking through the reviews of the Incredibly Easy series, I knew it was a good book.

I decided to go for the Incredibly Visual book for Anatomy because I thought the pictures would be helpful (my textbook already has a bunch of words in it; no need to buy another book with a bunch of words). When I got the book, it was just okay. While the pictures were in full color and very detailed, there was probably only 5 pages for each anatomy part. And I know that there isn't any anatomical books out there that will go over every body part in detail, but this book seemed to lack information.

For the price, it isn't as informational as I would like, but it is a good guide to go with "Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies" or some other guide. As a study helper alone however, you're better off reading your textbook.

Visual learners rejoice!

For anyone who has struggled through their Anatomy & Physiology course, this is a terrific asset. It does not, I repeat, NOT, replace the hard core work of an A&P class. But for those folks who need visuals to support the words, this is an excellent choice. It also comes in handy if you are a health care professional who needs to explain physical functions.

About the Author
Maxine Aston is a qualified counsellor, trainer and supervisor specialising in Asperger syndrome. She has worked with almost two thousand clients with Asperger syndrome, and runs workshops for therapists and professionals who come into contact with adolescents or adults with Asperger syndrome. Maxine also offers assessments for clients who suspect they may be on the autism spectrum. She has an MSc in Health Psychology and is the author of Asperger's in Love , The Asperger Couple's Workbook and What Men with Asperger Syndrome Want to Know About Women, Dating and Relationships, also published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. She is a regular speaker at national and international conferences, and lives in Coventry, UK.

Buying to keep, not a one-time read

I just read this book which I borrowed from my library. However, it so described experiences of my life with my (now deceased) husband so clearly that I am purchasing it so I can yellow-line the pertinent pages. The information is presented simply and it is easily understood for a layperson. After a lifetime with a man who is described so fully in this book, I can only say I wish I had been aware of what his issues had been and perhaps found ways to understand a better way of living with them. If you have wondered sometimes about your partner's approach to everything, read this book because it may provide answers.

For a women who suspects her spouse may be on the autism spectrum this book offered support/ understanding and especially validation for feelings she's been experiencing for most of their 23. 5 years of marriage. Great overview, but wrong on domestic violence

I am NT and my husband is AS. We benefited greatly in reading this as a general overview shortly after we learned he is on the Spectrum. It is a pretty encapsulating place to start if you are new to a diagnosis or wondering if you or your partner is on the Spectrum. It also offers some strategies and tips for improving communication. The only issue I had with it was that the author says that domestic violence is "quite uncommon," yet she mentions sudden, explosive anger, including toward children, and even throwing objects, in several sections of the book. Verbal abuse, breaking things and creating a scary or unpredictable environment for your children to grow up in and emotional (if not physical) damage to your wife is domestic violence. The author acknowledges that after the outburst the AS partner recovers quickly, whereas the NT is left wounded and "in a flood of tears." The AS partner is frustrated that the NT is still upset. The NT is left to get over it on his or her own. I just don't find this acceptable. I don't know the solution to this frequent part of a NT/AS marriage, but I just don't accept where she leaves this topic. Overall, however, a very informative book.

Fun projects for your extra Raspberry Pi's

I have a number of Raspberry Pi's sitting around from various projects I have experimented with in the past. I came across this book on building a cluster using two Raspberry Pi's.

The book guides you though MPI (Message Passing Interface) and Hadoop and provides novices with a good guide for getting started.

As well as software development aspects there are some fun little side projects like building your own stackable case using Lego's. There is also an interesting introduction to super computing to give you a background to the field.

Overall a great introduction to parallel computing aimed at the novice.

Photosynthetic reaction centers are intrinsic membrane proteins which, by performing a photoinduced transmembrane charge separation, are responsible for the conversion and storage of solar energy. Since the pioneering work of Reed and Clayton (1968) on the isolation of the reaction center from photosynthetic bacteria, optical spectroscopy with polarized light has been one of the main tools used to investigate the geometrical arrangement of the various chromophores in these systems. The recent elucidation by X-ray crystallography of the structure of several bacterial reaction centers, a breakthrough initiated by Michel and Deisenhofer, has provided us with the atomic coordinates of the pigments and some details about their interactions with neighboring aminoacid residues. This essential step has given a large impetus both to experimentalists and to theoreticians who are now attempting to relate the X-ray structural model to the optical properties of the reaction center and ultimately to its primary biological function.

How World Peace Day came to be and the man that helped it become this special day

This book is the story of Jeremy Gilley and his quest to make a World Peace Day. We all want world peace and a good place to start is one day.... and maybe one day there will be world peace. We need our future to know about World Peace Day - which if you don't know is September 21.

This is the story of how Jeremy started with a great idea, how he traveled around the world speaking to presidents, the Dalai Lama and United Nations. How he had help from friends, shot a short film on war and how it effects the children who live in war zones. In one day of peace with no fighting or shooting a lot could be accomplished like food and water would be able to be transported to places that need it, children can sleep without fear, roads can be paved, homes, building, and infrastructures can be fixed, health workers can give immunizations and real heros can inspire others to stretch and family can see each other.

The illustrations are done in a collage style with photos of Jeremy, photos of children from all over the world and also used news print and paintings. The book is definately for older children, I'd sugguest 2nd grade and up. And you can also go to the website [...] and remember 1 person can make change and peace!

Inspiration for all ages.

Peace One Day is a colorful, enchanting and inspiring book. It is the story of a young man who believes that one person can make a difference in the world and has demonstrated it many times over. Sometimes the world seems too big, too complex and out of reach, particularly to kids. True changemakers appear larger than life or saints but here is a story about Jeremy Gilley who is just a man who loves children, loves life and loves peace. He set out to establish a single day of peace on the calendar when all countries and people observe a global ceasefire when food and medicine can get across borders and refugees can return to their families. He set out asking heads of state, dignitaries and engage children all over the globe.

Illustrated by Pulitzer Award winning Karen Blessen, this collage of pictures, narration and photos tells all about it. You can show the pictures to preschoolers, read together with grade-schoolers and share the possibility of peace, but most of all you can tell kids that they can make a difference, one person at a time. I love this book and its message.

Well written and engaging but oh-so-predictable

Book 2 in what is set to be an on-going soap opera with a taster of Book 3 included at the end.

BBAB is yet another reinterpretation of the classic Beauty and The Beast theme. It's well told but I found it less immersive than Book 1 on account of pretty much being able to anticipate well in advance where the next shoe would fall. As per Book 1, internal dialog carries the story: it's very good from Autumn's perspective but Eagle's by comparison is a little clunky and less confident. I suspect because he's supposed to be an alpha male...so, perhaps would have been better to use a suitably qualified male collaborator to cover his chapters...just saying.

The reason for 3-Stars is down to the sheer predictability of the story. I guessed how BBAB was going to end right at start - and nailed it - meaning the only open question is what you get to experience on the way to the destination. Staying with this criticism, I believe good stories (like good movies) *don't* give invested audiences what they generally expect; there has to be a clever twist or surprising departure and this is absent in BBAB.

To close: in a face-to-face shootout, Book 1 wins hands down for its stronger characters and story-telling creativity.

I started this series last week and since then I've been consumed by these characters and the awful reality they have now found themselves in.

I'll start by saying this is one of the most amazing series I've ever read. It tears you apart in one scene but then puts you back together in the next. The depth of the characters and the story means that I have now been left with a mass of emotions and I need more!!!!!

Beneath Blood and Bone is set in Purgatory which is where Lei, Eve and Alex escaped from in Thicker than Blood. This is made out to be a place of safety from the rotters that roam the street trying to eat you. But behind the closed gates it isn't always safe, everyone is out for themselves and you learn to trust no one. Jeffers and Liv rule it with sets of rules that are meant to protect, but that safety often turns to hell for the ones on the inside and some of them love to watch others pay a price for their own freedom!

This story focuses on Eagle and Autumn. Eagle is a dangerous man who prides himself on being in control inside the compound, Autumn was found in the wild and is completely feral when she is brought in. She fights for her freedom not realising the cost it may have on her life, luckily for her Eagle turns out to be an unlikely saviour and the two of them embark on a difficult friendship that leads them both to face the things they have been hiding from.

This story isn't pretty, it's gory, twisted, heart breaking and intense, but along the way there are glimmers of light, love and hope.
Home is not a place, but a feeling and in the world they are living in that means more than anything else.

Madeline and Claire are formidable writers blending their words together seamlessly creating a terrifying yet beautiful world. They aren't scared of shocking you as a reader and I absolutely love that, they take you on a journey one that will filter into your soul and stay forever.

This series is so much more than the rotters that walk the earth, its about emotions, heartache and love which we may only have for a moment, but that moment is better than never feeling love again.
I took a chance on this series and I'm so glad I did, this is one of the best series I've read this year.

this book will save your back

I am totally enthralled with this book. I am a petite woman and I do not want to make 5 gallon batches of beer on my deck or in my garage. It is hard and dangerous hauling around 6 gallon glass jugs of beer. I do love making small batches of beer in my kitchen on my stove. I am tired of making mediocre EXTRACT beers. This book is what I've been waiting for. All recipes are 1 gallon ALL-GRAIN. The majority of the recipes use a couple different hops and easy to find grains. Each recipe gives you the choice of dry or liquid yeast. A lot of the recipes use fresh fruit, and/or spices, and are primed with honey or maple syrup. As soon as I got this book I made the Everyday IPA. It is now bottled and will be ready to drink in a week or two.

There are a good two dozen or more beers I want to brew. The book is separated into seasonal sections. The Everyday IPA is a Spring beer. Other got-to-make beers are: the Grapefruit Honey Ale (Summer), Cranberry Wheat (Fall) and Chocolate Maple Porter (Winter). Other interesting recipes are the Apple Crisp Ale, Prohibition Ale (which uses raisins to prime the beer), Cardamom Ale, Grapes & Grain Ale, Pumpkin Dubble, Chestnut Brown Ale, Winter Wheat Ale, Dates & Honey Ale and the New Year Beer.

Each recipe has suggested food pairings. At the end of each seasonal chapter there are food recipes using beer from the book such as Beer Mustard, Lavender Shortbread with Honey-Beer Glaze, BBQ Beer Barbecue Sauce, Beer-Brined Pickles, and even Spent-Grain Dog Biscuits! There is an index, sources and glossary in the back.

Beware newbies - the book is sketchy on how to brew and gives you just the briefest of instructions. But there's plenty of places online for all that how-to information (google How to Brew by John Palmer) and many, many books. Each recipe has a 5 gallon conversion for brewers who enjoy making larger batches. I am so thrilled to have a nice little book with lots of interesting recipes, all figured out for 1 gallon batches.

Bringing Brooklyn to my Kitchen

This book has inspired me to take up home brewing again. For a short while I was an extract brewer. It was fun, but not the same as being able to say you produced a full mash home brew. Having had most of the equipment, a 5 gallon fermentor, a 6 quart dutch oven, etc, I only needed the scale and the thermometer. I purchased the ingredients and away I went. I've made three beers from the book so far and love everyone of them (the "Well Made Triple" is my favorite so far-- I'm quit partial to belgian beers). I'm working on making three more within the next few weeks.

I like how the authors keep it simple. Follow these six basic steps and you get beer. Mmmmm beer. It keeps the reader from panicking about various things that can go wrong during the process. On the other hand being as curious as I am about the beer making process I find myself looking for more detailed information elsewhere. For example, during one batch it took a while for the fermentation process to begin and searched through forums as well as the yeast producers website to determine what was going on. I later found out it can take up to 36 hours to see the yeast in action.

One more critique: some recipes seem inconsistent. They say in the beginning that they will suggest a dry yeast and liquid yeast for all recipes, which they don't. Being how there are so many great yeast to choose from and each offering a slight to huge change in hoe the beer comes out, it would be nice to have at least two options.

The authors small batch or one gallon approach to making beer at home is a paradigm shift. I don't have to invest in a expensive brew pots or mash tuns. I don't have to spend all day brewing beer (I can do a batch in about 5 hours). I don't have to spend all day bottling beer and with the continuous purchasing of one gallon apple juice cider bottles I'll be able to ferment a plethora of beers at once. (I live in a small condo with limited space, those in a house, especially those with a basement, obviously have plenty of space for 5 gallon fermentors.) Then again the idea of this book was bringing beer making to the kitchen.

Overall I find this book to be an easy straightforward recipe book, getting me off the couch and into the kitchen to make beer.

A fun book for the experienced brewer as well

I've been Brewing The Classic Styles for a couple of years now. I think the JZ & JP book is essential for any home brewer, full of sound advice and solid recipes. But this book, the Beer Making Book, is inspiring me with more interesting, creative, and fun recipes.

The creative and radical recipes are what make this book so great. There are a few standards, but mostly not. For example, there is a gluten free beer made (unbelievably) from carrots. A bourbon Dubbel made with Bourbon soaked oak chips, a cherry beer make with cherries and cherry wood smoked malt. A Gose with instructions for a 3 day sour mash. There are four gluten free beer recipes in this book, and for one of them, you malt your own buckwheat. They have easy to follow instructions for germinating then drying and crushing it. I know these recipes have been tested and so I feel safe trying them out even if it sounds outrageous. For me, this is like Randy Moser's Radical Brewing, but with well described recipes. Many of the recipes use seasonal ingredients.

The book contains all-grain recipes for making both one and five gallon batches. Five gallons is a traditional home brew batch size, and one gallon is really small, since you will only yield about 8 bottles. The benefit of the one gallon batch size is that you do not have to buy a large pot, you may already own one. When I first started brewing I purchased a one gallon kit from the Brooklyn Brewshop (authors of the book) and brewed my first really good beer using it and their very clear instructions. It was the one gallon "Well Made Tripel" kit. Since then I've I stopped using kits and only make larger batches, but there are so many fun recipes in here that I might just pick up a mini fermentor and try them as one gallon batches. It seems like it would be easy to make a small batch on a weeknight after work and a way to try many recipes with less time commitment.

There is quite a bit of easy to read instructions for the beginner. Their writing is good, clear, and entertaining. I think this book is fun for the novice or experienced brewer.
